Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
