Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.
This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a document approving the detention, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.
His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's decision was the chance of his move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is located around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
The former president was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on the eighth of January, many his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.
The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
