The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any prominent honors show nears, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
