Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these drugs need to be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become starving," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
