Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Officers say they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then found numerous other smeared cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests show the fluid was most likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; investigators are currently not cognizant of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have asked to the residents for details.
An important official commented the vandalism made him without words and required to be addressed promptly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
